The classic bus tour. The journey starts at the Nature Centre, where the guide boards the bus. We make stops at the National Museum's Commander's Farm, where stories about whalers and commanders are shared. We briefly see the whale bone fence, which bears witness to the many objects that were brought to the area during the heyday. After the tour in the North, we drive to Lakolk, where tourism is the main focus. The tour concludes down by Rømø Church, and if time allows, we will also visit the Harbour in Havneby.
The tour begins at the parking lot by Ballum Slusekro, where the guide boards the vehicle. We drive to Ballum and hear along the way about the successful work in restoring the village's beautiful old marsh farms. This work has been supported by the A.P. Moller Foundation.
During the tour along the dike, the guide tells us about the storm floods that have shaped the marshland throughout history, and on the embankment, we learn about land reclamation efforts and the food chain in the Wadden Sea National Park and the many migratory birds that use the area as a "pantry".
As a prelude to the visit at Sct. Clemens Church, we will cover a bit of Rømø's history. First, we take a tour of the cemetery, where we will hear about what the commanders' stones – gravestones placed over captains of whaling and sealing ships in the Arctic – can tell us about the island's heyday.
Inside the church, we will look at chandeliers, church ships, and the altar, which reflects the wealth that the Greenland trade brought to the island from the 16th to the 18th century.
We conclude the tour at the soldiers' gravestones, which give an impression of how World War I and II affected Rømø.
