Teaching

At the Nature Centre Tønnisgård, we create dynamic teaching experiences in and with nature – for school classes, outdoor schools, and kindergartens. We are located in the heart of the Wadden Sea National Park and offer exciting programmes where children and young people experience nature and culture up close. Teaching always takes into account the age, class level, and academic ability of the children, and is directly linked to the Common Goals and curriculum themes.

Every year, more than 1,200 children participate in our tours and activities. Some come as part of a school service scheme with Tønder Municipality, while others visit us as part of an outdoor school or an inspiring day for kindergartens. No matter who you are, we help tailor programmes and activities so that your trip to the Wadden Sea is both educational and memorable.

Activities both outdoors in nature and indoor at a ‘workshop’
The activities cover a wide range – from trips to the Wadden Sea, shrimp fishing and bunker walks to cooking over a campfire, insect-hunting expeditions and amber polishing. We explore wildlife in ponds, build kites, undertake creative projects with mussels and much more.

We might head to the seabed at low tide, down into a dark bunker with a torch in hand, or out into the waves equipped with a shrimp net. The activities are always tailored to your age, interests and academic focus – and we are happy to combine them with free teaching materials from MitVadehav.dk, so that the experience also provides value before and after the visit.

We are also part of the international network IWSS – International Wadden Sea School, where we develop educational programmes and collaborate across Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.
