We offer a wide range of activities both at the Nature Centre and around the island. Activities and excursions are, of course, tailored to the age of the group or class, the National Curriculum, the current subject focus and the area of study. Possible excursions include:

Need a little inspiration?

A typical programme with us includes both a trip to the Wadden Sea and an experience in the bunkers. The combination appeals to a wide audience and works for both middle and upper primary school pupils

Wadden Sea Excursion

Near Havneby lies a perfect mudflat where the class can experience the Wadden Sea up close, feel the mud between their toes and hold a lugworm in their hands. The trip is interspersed with small tasks along the way, tailored to the age group, and there is ample opportunity to explore the animal and plant life on and around the mudflats, equipped with rakes and nets. We head out when the tide has gone out, giving you the unique opportunity to walk on a dry seabed. Here you can see the tracks of the animals that live on the seabed and are usually hidden from view. And we can easily dig them up and study them up close.

Bunker Tour

Join us on a walk through Tvismark Plantage, where we’ll delve into one of history’s darkest chapters. What was life like on Rømø during the Second World War? How many bunkers were built on Rømø, and, more importantly, why? What was it like to live on an occupied island? Why did a world war break out, and who was involved? These are just some of the questions we’ll ask and find answers to on the tour.

School camp activities linked to highly academic teaching materials

Tønnisgård Nature Centre is part of the ‘Wadden Sea Education Forum’, a community of educators that develops teaching materials for use in primary schools and nurseries. All the materials are available on the national park’s educational platform, mitvadehav.dk.

There are over 200 activities on the site, which can be sorted by year group, theme, season and much more. So it’s easy to find just the right activity. In addition, there is also a wealth of knowledge available for both pupils and teachers, such as fact sheets on the animals of the Wadden Sea, videos on topics including how the tides work, identification sheets for the Wadden Sea’s animals and plants – ready to print and take on a trip – and in-depth articles on subjects such as the Atlantic Wall by the Wadden Sea.

The material is available to download free of charge from the website mitvadehav.dk and is of a high academic standard, whilst also being aligned with the schools’ Common Simplified Objectives and the curriculum themes for early years education.

If your class is planning a trip to the Wadden Sea, it’s a really good idea to work through some of the material from Mit Vadehav before you arrive, so that the pupils are well prepared.

A school camp requires more than just great activities, which is why we are part of the National Park’s school camp network. This means we can help plan the entire trip, from accommodation and transport to activities.

More school trip activities with nature, movement and curiosity

At Tønnisgård, there’s much more than the Wadden Sea and bunkers. Create a programme that engages hands, minds and hearts – from exploring tiny creatures on land, in water and in the air, to catching shrimp on a fishing tour, to outdoor cooking or collecting marine litter.

Give students the opportunity to explore the creeping-crawling life on land, in water and in the air – or let them catch shrimp on a shrimp-catching trip. You can also cook over a campfire, go on a coastal trip, dive into cooking, or immerse yourselves in the life that hides at the water's edge. The activities provide space for curiosity and movement and can be adapted to both age and educational focus.

This is an active school camp, where students feel nature, understand connections and build unforgettable memories.

Packing List for School Camp at the Wadden Sea

The Danish weather can be brisk – especially by the coast – but that doesn't stop anyone from having a fantastic trip. Here’s a handy school camp packing list when visiting us:

Windproof clothing – essential all year round
Wellies or spare shoes for the beach trip
Change of clothes – especially trousers, which can easily get wet
Flashlight (or phone with a light) for the bunker trip
