Make your own amber souvenir
The beaches on Rømø are renowned for being great places to find amber, especially after stormy weather and high tide. However, despite this, you need to be really lucky to find a large piece of amber. That’s why we’ve cheated a little and bought amber from mines. So there’s always a guarantee of amber at Tønnisgård. But amber from mines requires work to bring out its beauty and lustre.
So once you’ve found just the right piece of amber, we’ll be ready with sandpaper, polishing cloths and paste. Then the work begins to shape your very own piece of amber. You’ll receive advice and guidance on making a beautiful pendant for a necklace or a lovely pocket stone.
Sanding amber is both enjoyable and relaxing, and as you immerse yourself in the work, you’ll create your very own personal souvenir. And everyone can join in, even the very little ones.
In our exhibition, you can also see a large lump of copal, 10 million years old, which we received from a fisherman who caught it in his net. Copal is also known as immature amber. It is ‘young’ amber that still needs to lie for a few million years before it becomes fully fossilised.
We almost always have time and space for you to polish amber – even outside the programme. So do pop in! – The price is per piece of amber.
