Tønnisgård is an old commander's farm from the height of Rømø's prosperity. The original part of the building dates back far into history.
In the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, a number of commanders from Rømø took command of large whaling vessels, which were on trading voyages and long whale hunts in the North Atlantic. The commanders brought wealth to many of the island's families and built, among other things, the beautiful commander's farms on the island.
The elongated, straw-thatched farm is beautifully restored and an experience in itself.
In 2017, we built a fire cabin with a stone oven, fire cooker, and grill. There is space for larger and smaller groups when we gratinate oysters in the stone oven or grill lamb sausages for tidal flat hotdogs with foraged herbs from the salt marsh.
