UNESCO and the Wadden Sea – A Unique World Heritage Site
The Wadden Sea is one of the most extraordinary coastal ecosystems on the planet. In 2009, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its outstanding natural value, rich biodiversity, and global importance. Stretching along the coasts of Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, the Wadden Sea forms the world’s largest unbroken intertidal system.
This dynamic landscape is shaped daily by tides, creating extensive mudflats, sandbanks, tidal channels, and shallow waters. The Wadden Sea is a critical habitat for millions of migratory birds, providing an essential stopover and feeding ground along the East Atlantic Flyway, which connects the Arctic with Europe and Africa.
