The Wadden Sea is known for its large population of oysters, which are very easy to gather. At low tide, they lie exposed on the mudflats, ready to be picked. During the trip, you’ll also have plenty of opportunity to experience some of the other wonders the Wadden Sea has to offer. You can see the green egg sacs of the ragworm, wading birds flying over the oyster beds, or seals resting in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What you need to know before an oyster-fishing trip
On Rømø, the oyster bed isn’t very far out in the Wadden Sea; you only have to walk about 500–600 metres along the seabed. Although this isn’t far, it can be tough, as the seabed is muddy in places. That’s why you need to be reasonably fit to make the trip out there. If you’re unsure whether the oyster trip is for you, give us a call and we’ll advise you.
You’ll need long-shafted rubber boots to walk out to the oyster bed. Not because we’ll be walking in water, but because of the mud. In addition, dress for the weather – often windproof and waterproof clothing. Dress warmer than you might expect, as it is often windy out on the oyster bed and there is no shelter.
Bring buckets or cloth bags to collect oysters in, and work gloves that can get wet and dirty. Plastic gloves won’t do, as the oysters will cut holes in them. It is also a good idea to bring an oyster knife. The guide will provide buckets, gloves and knives, which can be purchased in cash or via MobilePay.
Dogs are not allowed on the oyster bed, as they can cut their paws on the sharp oyster shells.
The best oysters can be found on the natural oyster banks in the Wadden Sea. On our oyster tours on Rømø, you have the opportunity to pick fresh oysters directly from the seabed.
The oyster season in the Wadden Sea primarily runs from autumn to spring - October to April - when the water temperature is low, ensuring the best and freshest oysters.
