Make a real difference to biodiversity
Many of our insects lack suitable habitats because we tidy up too much in nature and in our gardens. With this activity, we’re taking matters into our own hands and creating luxury homes for these little, buzzing helpers.
You’ll make two hotels: one you can take home to your garden or balcony, and one that stays on Rømø as your personal contribution to the island’s biodiversity.

Build and decorate an insect hotel
The frames for our insect hotels have been prepared by inmates at Renbæk Prison. Our task is to transform these empty frames into safe homes. We need to assemble, fill and decorate the hotels using exactly the natural materials that insects love and need to thrive.
You will make two insect hotels. You’ll take one hotel home so you can continue helping in your own garden or on your balcony. And one hotel will stay here on Rømø as your personal gift to the island’s nature.
Along the way, we’ll dive into the fascinating world of insects. We’ll talk about why they’re in need of housing, which materials they prefer, and how you can use simple steps to make your own daily life a little wilder and more insect-friendly. We’ll also take a short walk in the area around Tønnisgaard and see what insects we can spot.

This tour was developed as part of the VABENE project in the Wadden Sea National Park, which works to strengthen the balance between using and protecting our unique nature. #vabene
The price for this activity is 250 DKK, which covers two insect hotels and materials—perfect as a family activity.
