Become an architect for some of nature’s smallest heroes as we build and decorate insect hotels. Join this cosy and educational activity, where we use nature’s own materials to create homes for different insects.

Many of our insects lack suitable habitats because we tidy up too much in nature and in our gardens. With this activity, we take matters into our own hands and create luxury homes for the small, buzzing helpers.

You will make two insect hotels: one to take home to your garden or balcony, and one that will stay on Rømø as your personal contribution to the island’s biodiversity.

Build and furnish an insect home

The frames for our insect hotels have been prepared by inmates at Renbæk Prison. Our task is to transform the empty frames into safe homes. We will collect, fill and decorate the hotels with exactly the natural materials that insects love and need in order to thrive.

You will make two insect hotels. One hotel goes home with you, so you can continue helping insects in your own garden or on your balcony. The other hotel stays here on Rømø as your personal gift to the island’s nature.

Along the way, we dive into the fascinating world of insects. We talk about why they are short of suitable homes, which materials they prefer, and how you can make your own garden a little wilder and more insect-friendly with a few simple steps. We also take a short walk in the area around Tønnisgård to see which insects we can spot.

DIY insect hotel – build your own insect hotel

In this activity, children and adults can build their own creative insect hotel using different natural materials and small spaces for the garden’s useful insects. It is all about collecting, building and furnishing your own DIY insect hotel, where imagination and practical hands come into play.

Along the way, you can fill the insect hotel with branches, cones, bamboo and other materials that create good hiding places for small insects. The finished insect hotel is both a cosy do-it-yourself project and a fun memory from your time on Rømø.

This activity was developed as part of the VABENE project in Wadden Sea National Park, which works to strengthen the interaction between use and protection of our unique nature. #vabene

The price for this activity is DKK 250 and covers two insect hotels and materials – perfect as a shared family activity.
