A new chapter begins:

Tønnisgård is set to become a new visitor centre in 2028

In 2028, we will open the doors to a brand-new, modern visitor centre on Rømø. Our mission is clear: we want to give our visitors a deeper and more vivid understanding of why the Wadden Sea has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are great things in store, and you can follow the whole journey here on this page.

What can you look forward to?

A new, interactive exhibition: A sensory and hands-on exhibition where both children and adults can explore the Wadden Sea’s unique dynamics, wildlife and culture.

A new and unique building: An architectural landmark that blends into the surrounding landscape and sets the scene for nature interpretation in the future.

Restoration of our historic commander’s estate: We are bringing the historic commander’s estate, Tønnisgaard, back to life, so that cultural history and the story of the whaling era stand side by side with the new nature interpretation.

We are moving temporarily to Havneby

To make way for the new building, the area around Tønnisgaard will soon be transformed into a building site.

But we’re not closing down because of this! We’re temporarily moving down to the harbour in Havneby, from where we’ll continue our activities, tours and educational programmes throughout the construction period.

Follow us behind the scenes

The construction of the new centre will be an exciting journey, and we want you to join us along the way. We’ll keep you updated regularly on this page.
